On an average, for a free surgical eye camp, the total expenses that we incur is Rs. 90,000/-[$2200]. This includes the expenses for conducting the camp and also the surgical charges. We have been doing this service free of cost right from the year 2000. After the formation of the Cochin Eye Foundation in 2004, the community services were well organized. Regular meetings and clinical audits were conducted and it was found that we were able to achieve a success rate of 92% in cataract surgeries done through the camps. In patients who had suboptimal visual improvement, 5% had coexisting retinal diseases limiting visual improvement. Our complication rate was found to be <3%. None of the patients had any infection after surgery. This is a significant achievement as the complication rates are around 15 to 20% in the country in camp surgeries.
Sustaining the quality of care for these deserving patients has been a great challenge for a small organization like ours. We have received some support from our own members, who have generously sponsored 2 or 3 surgeries in few of the camps. Now we find that it is becoming more and more difficult to sustain the community services due to lack of funds. A major portion of our income has been utilized for these camps. From the year 2000 onwards, we have conducted more than 30 outreach camps and operated more than 600 patients absolutely free of cost.
In 2005, we organized a camp at Kalpatta, Wyanad District, in a tribal area. We evaluated 1200 patients in the camp and did procedures including the retinal laser photocoagulation. That was the first eye camp where such costly equipments were brought to the camp site and Laser photocoagulation was performed. The entire project costed us approximately Rs. 100,000 [$2500]. We need your support for continuing such community eye care services. Donate generously to Cochin Eye Foundation. |
