Activities CEF aims to provide high quality eye care to the deserving population in and around Cochin. CEF regularly conducts free eye camps and identifies patients requiring ophthalmic surgeries. These patients are then given an appointment at REC and are worked up for the surgeries and operated upon using the same facility available for a paying patient. The camp patients are not charged and the expenses are shared by the hospital and CEF. Ninety percentage of camp patients undergo state of the art phacoemulsification cataract surgery with foldable intraocular lens implantation. Patients requiring medical management are either given appropriate care at the camp site and those needing detailed evaluation are brought to the base hospital. Certain cases of retinal diseases requiring surgery or lasers are also included in the camp and the procedures are done at a subsidised rate (usually 1/3rd the original cost). However as most of these patients are below the poverty line, such procedures are also done absolutely free of cost. |
